NBA 50th Anniversary 1996-1997 – NBA at 50 Champion Jerseys (Part 1)

During this 1996-1997 season the NBA marked 50 years of existence. Its purpose was to celebrate its history as well as early stars and teams. Contrary to NFL and MLB which had young players familiar with old-time stars of these leagues, the NBA has been notoriously ineffective in promoting its past and past legendary players. It had seen significant growth in popularity in those years (Larry Bird and Magic Johnson) and the 1990s (Michael Jordan and the Bulls), but those recent stars have dominated stars of the past. During the 80s and into the 1990s, the league was determined to move forward and was growing into a global brand, and thus never took time to reflect on its past. As a result, kids such as me in the late 90s were unaware of which Bill Russell, Jerry West, Oscar Robertson, Pistol Pete Maravich or George Gervin were, or what they knew about the ABA. soccer shop club reviews
